| Prized by medieval roaylty; inspiration for unicorn myths; narwhal tusks have driven men to extremes for centuries.; Today the quest for tusks and skin threatens some populations. Due to hunting practices, up to five whales are stuck and lost for each one captured. The population has declined by 80% in the past twenty years. CAPTION: A herd of large male narwhal carefully wield their tusks as they try and catch a brief in a small opening in the diminishing sea ice. Aftar a long winter under extreme ice cover and -40celsius tempteratures, the whales take this opportunity to pursue the new populations of Arctic cod, their main staple. Hunters know of this annual arrival and greet them with gun fire. Becasue of the poor hunting techniques up to five whales are struck and lost, causing an 80% decline in the whale population. |
