| CAPTION: Two very large males gently stroke each other with their tusks in a behaviour called tusking. Hunters shoot the whales for their ivory and some skin. All of the meat always goes to waste. Selection of animals with large tusks is removing the biggest and strongest males from the population. It took me 15 years of trying before I was able to figure out a technique to finally get close to male narwhal underwater, due to their very sensitive echolocation. |
