| CAPTION: A pod of male narwhal rest in a melt hole in the spring sea ice. The whales live in a world with 90% ice cover most of the year and their excellent echolation allows them to navigate these narrow icy openings. Any whales with white scars as seen on two of the whales in this photograph are the exit wounds from high powered rifles. A research project showed that over 60% of the whales have been shot at least once. Hunters in Northern Greenland always use harpoons first avoiding wounding and sinking whales. |
