| CAPTION: After long dives under the sea ice, these whales desperately need to catch a breath. Sometimes they take turns breathing but at other times, they put their chins together and force themselves up through the hole together. We used a small ultralight airplane to fly 50 kilometres out into the pack ice in order to witness this rare behavior. After years of trying to get close to these timid whales, here was a chance where I could have reached out and grabbed their tusks as they were so plentiful and relaxed. The large white scar on the whale on the right is a bullet exit wound. The bullet would have just missed the brain. |
